  • canola or olive oil, for cooking
  • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 1/2 lbs Only Alberta Beef extra lean ground beef or ground sirloin
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional - keep a few leaves for garnish)
  • 2-4 tbsp Founders & Farmers chili powder
  • 2-4 tbsp cocoa
  • 2 tsp Founders & Farmers cumin
  • 19oz (540ml) canned diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 19ox (540ml) canned crushed tomatoes
  • 19oz (540ml) can Cal & Gary's organic red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 19oz (540ml) can Cal & Gary's organic black beans or Cal & Gary's organic chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup salsa
  • salt and pepper, to taste

How to make it

  1. Heat a drizzle of oil in a medium-large pot set over medium-high heat.
  2. Sauté the onions for 4-5 minutes, until soft.
  3. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the beef and cook, stirring and breaking up any lumps with a spoon, until it's no longer pink.
  5. If you like, add the chopped cilantro.
  6. Add the chili powder, cocoa and cumin and cook for another minute.
  7. Add the tomatoes, beans (chickpeas) and salsa and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  8. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about and hour, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper.
  9. Serve hot, topped with sour cream and grated cheese, or cool it down and the refrigerate it for a day or tow: reheat over low heat on the stovetop.
