A Big Win for a Co-op Pharmacist

female runner webOne of Co-op’s own has won a prestigious award from the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA). Clinical Pharmacist, Gina Giurguis, received the New Practitioner Award for her ongoing commitment to the pharmacy industry and promoting the profession.

“It means so much to me to win this award and is truly an honor to be recognized by CPHA,” Gina says. “I always strive to provide the highest quality of patient care and it’s wonderful to be recognized for it.”

The CPhA New Practitioner Award recognizes a pharmacist who has been in practice five years or less, has demonstrated a commitment to pharmacy at the undergraduate level, and has continued to promote the profession.

“When I read the criteria for the award it was exactly Gina,” says Manager Sonal Ejner, who nominated her for the award.

“It’s an incredible accomplishment to be nationally recognized. Gina is an ideal pharmacist because she represents the profession and is a true a leader in her field. We are very fortunate to have such a skilled and talented pharmacist at Calgary Co-op,” Sonal adds.

blood pressuretest webGina has been working at Calgary Co-op for four years and is one of three Clinical Pharmacists. Instead of spending her time behind the counter, Gina travels between seven Calgary Co-op pharmacies, meeting with patients for medical reviews and specialized consultations.

“Gina knows how to build trust with the patients to help improve their health outcomes, she has a natural ability to connect with people,” Sonal explains.

“Working for Calgary Co-op is very rewarding; I work with supportive management that enables me to work to my full potential and to my full scope as a pharmacist,” Gina says. “This all allows me to make a difference and an impact on patient care.”

Making that impact is what inspires Gina to work hard and continually strive to grow and improve.

“Moving forward, I want to continue to work in the community, make lasting professional relationships with other health care professionals, and using those connections to provide the best possible care for my patients.”
